Braces-Friendly Halloween Candy

Halloween is just around the corner, and we know that this means kids everywhere are getting excited for a night of frightful fun– but no matter how scary the monsters may seem, no one is more afraid of Halloween than orthodontists! While trick or treating may seem like an innocent pastime, the truth is that Halloween candy can lead to cavities and dental decay that can cause serious harm to teeth– and for patients wearing braces, candy can easily get stuck in wires or break off brackets, completely derailing treatment. At Smile Worx Orthodontics in Edmonton, Leduc, and surrounding areas, Dr. Crichton, Dr. Burke, and Dr. Cheba want you to a Halloween that's fun for you and your teeth. Here's our guide to braces-friendly Halloween candy!

Halloween Treats That Are Safe for Braces

While the best thing for your braces would be to forego Halloween candy altogether, we understand how difficult that can be. Instead, be careful about the candy you do eat and make sure it's only candy that won't harm or break your braces.

In general, you'll want to stay away from anything that's hard, sticky, gooey, or crunchy. Jolly ranchers, tootsie rolls, lollipops, licorice, caramel, gum, taffy, jelly beans– anything that might get stuck between the brackets on your braces or break off a bracket altogether should be avoided. Doing this will help protect your braces and ensure that your orthodontic treatment stays on track.

Instead of these Halloween candies, choose options that are softer and don't require as much chewing. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kats, 3 Musketeers bars, and Oreos are all great options. No matter what you do, just be sure to brush and floss your teeth immediately after eating candy!
